Define the immersion architecture first
Single-phase and two-phase immersion use different heat-transfer approaches. Start with the supplier’s actual system design, approved fluid and supported equipment. OCP publishes immersion requirements and compatibility resources for data-center engineering; these help frame the review but do not certify an arbitrary ASIC conversion. Obtain confirmation for the complete intended installation.
Inventory everything that contacts the fluid
Compatibility extends beyond the chip and enclosure. Seals, cable jackets, labels, adhesives, thermal materials and connectors may contact the fluid. OCP’s material-compatibility work treats the relationship between a particular material and fluid as something to evaluate. Create a contact-material list and have suppliers identify what evidence covers the intended temperature and exposure.
Request a fluid evidence package
Ask for the technical data sheet, safety data sheet, batch identification, approved use conditions and compatibility evidence. Record handling, storage, contamination control and disposal requirements from those documents. A statement that a liquid is dielectric does not by itself establish long-term materials compatibility or the heat-transfer performance of your complete system.
Pilot the complete configuration
Use the agreed fluid, hardware, thermal interface, tank and circulation setup for a controlled trial. Define what will be observed: stable operation, temperatures, seals, fluid appearance and any material changes. Record the trial duration and limits of the evidence. A short successful demonstration should not be described as proof of multi-year reliability.
Plan removal, cleaning and warranty handling
Agree how equipment is lifted, drained, inspected and prepared for repair, and which party handles the fluid. Provide service access and a containment plan consistent with the system documentation. Get written confirmation of the equipment warranty treatment before conversion. Retain configuration and fluid-batch records with each device group so later failures can be investigated coherently.
