Upgrade miner firmware with a recovery plan

Match the image to the controller, test a representative machine and verify production after the upgrade.

Open miner controller board, removable memory card and service laptop with an abstract unlabeled progress bar, careful upgrade workbench.

01

Identify the exact hardware before downloading

Record model, controller revision, present firmware and cooling configuration. Read the release notes for the intended image, including supported upgrade paths. A similar model name is not enough. BITMAIN’s troubleshooting material explicitly treats model mismatch and damaged upgrade files as possible update failures. Keep the original download URL with your change record.

02

Save a baseline you can compare

Export settings where supported and capture pool configuration, operating mode, hashrate, power, temperatures and fault logs. Remove secrets from shared copies while retaining a secure operational backup. Choose a test device representative of the hardware you will update; a successful image on one controller revision does not prove compatibility with all revisions.

03

Use a small pilot before a fleet rollout

Manufacturer guidance recommends testing before broad updates. Define success before starting: stable startup, correct pool settings, expected boards detected and a comparable operating baseline. Provide stable power and follow the documented procedure. Let the trial cover normal operating conditions rather than accepting the first successful boot as sufficient evidence.

04

Verify recovery and downgrade constraints in advance

A saved old firmware file is not a complete rollback plan. Some security versions restrict downgrade paths, and controller recovery procedures differ. Confirm the official recovery method, required tools and responsible person before the maintenance window. If the documented path is unclear, resolve that uncertainty before updating production machines.

05

Check useful output, not only the version label

After the update, inspect local logs and the pool worker together. Compare accepted work, restart frequency, wall power and operating conditions with the saved baseline. If performance changed, account for any reset operating mode before attributing the difference to firmware. Record the result per hardware group and expand only after the group has a repeatable procedure.
