Algorithms, coins and merged mining

Choose the algorithm before comparing hashrate, then verify which networks and pool features the exact miner supports.

Three distinct ASIC chips with visibly different geometric circuit patterns, each docking into its own matching miner housing. Clearly different computation families.

01

Separate the algorithm, network and machine

A coin name identifies a network or asset; an algorithm describes the computation; a miner is hardware built to perform particular work. Start a shortlist with three columns for these layers. Add firmware and operating mode beside the exact model. A familiar enclosure or a high number on a sales page does not establish compatibility.

02

Hashrate units only make sense with the algorithm

TH/s and GH/s are rates, but each rate counts attempts at a particular calculation. A Bitcoin SHA-256 miner and a Scrypt miner perform different work. Compare units within a compatible algorithm, then inspect energy per unit of work. Do not rank unrelated miners by converting every number into TH/s and choosing the largest.

Merged mining is a pool and network capability

In supported merged-mining arrangements, work can contribute to more than one compatible chain. f2pool documents Litecoin and Dogecoin as an example. That does not let an arbitrary ASIC compute unrelated algorithms at once. Availability, credited assets and receiving-address requirements belong to the current pool rules; record them before including additional rewards in a comparison.

Build a compatibility worksheet

Complete the worksheet before buying or switching pools. For each claim, save the exact model manual or pool document rather than a screenshot of a profitability ranking. If a row remains unknown, keep it unknown in the comparison instead of treating it as supported.

Recheck the whole connection when switching

A compatible algorithm is the starting point. The pool must also support the intended chain and the miner connection. After changing settings, confirm the worker appears, accepted work accumulates and the payout asset is correct. Preserve the previous configuration so you can recover from a failed connection without rebuilding the setup from memory.
